Sony Handycam HDR-XR160E

Sony’s HDR-XR160E arrived in 2011 as the flagship of the hard drive Handycam lineup — 160GB of internal storage, 50p Full HD recording, and professional-grade G series optics in a package that still fit in one hand. It was one of Sony’s last serious pushes into HDD camcorders before flash memory took over entirely, which makes it something of a definitive send-off for the format: all the convenience of tapeless recording, pushed as far as it would go.

THE LOOKS

The XR160E is slightly chunkier than flash memory models — the 160GB hard drive earns its keep — but Sony kept the silhouette clean and traditional. The 3-inch touchscreen is a step up from earlier Handycams and flips out for flexible framing. Sony G lens branding on the barrel signals the professional-grade optics. Flash memory was already closing in by 2011, but this was Sony making sure the format went out on its own terms. A proper collector’s time capsule from the last era when a dedicated camcorder felt like the obvious choice.
