Sony’s DSC-WX1 came out in September 2009 and it was built to do one thing better than almost any pocket camera of its time: take good photos in low light. The trick was a bright lens paired with a new kind of sensor that soaks up more light — so dim bars, restaurants, and evening streets come out clear instead of dark and grainy. It also zooms 5×, fires off fast bursts, and has a mode that handles dark rooms without a flash.

THE LOOKS

In silver, the WX1 is a slim metal rectangle — 91 × 52 × 20mm, 149g — smaller and lighter than most cameras with this much zoom. The lens pokes out when you turn it on and tucks back in when you’re done. The screen fills the back, the buttons sit off to the right, and the finish is a soft matte silver rather than shiny chrome. Thin enough to forget in a pocket. Also in black and bronze.

THE SPECS

The lens is the star — it opens wide (the f/2.4 part) to let in lots of light, and it goes wide enough to fit a big group or a whole room in frame. Behind it, the sensor gathers about twice the light of a normal one its size, keeping photos clean in dim settings where older cameras got grainy. Built-in stabilization steadies your hands for sharp shots. Handheld Twilight quietly takes six photos and blends them into one clean low-light shot — no flash, no tripod. Plus a fast burst mode, panorama shots, and HD video. 91 × 52 × 20mm, 149g.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

  • A bright, wide lens: it lets in plenty of light for dim rooms and fits a whole group in frame — the main reason the WX1 is worth owning.
  • A light-hungry sensor: gathers about twice the light of a normal camera sensor its size, so night and indoor shots stay clear instead of grainy.
  • Handheld Twilight mode: quietly snaps six photos and merges them into one clean shot in the dark — no flash, no tripod, no fuss.

THE VERDICT

If you mostly shoot indoors, at night, or at parties, the WX1 is one of the few small cameras of its era that handled all well — the bright lens and light-hungry sensor keep things clear where other 2009 cameras forced a harsh flash. The multi-shot modes help even more in the dark. Its one limit is that it can’t hold the shutter open long enough for pitch-black night shots. Silver keeps it low-key. A pocket camera that works after the sun goes down.
