Sony’s DSC-W50 came out in 2006 as a simple, pocketable metal camera built to make photography effortless — turn it on, point, press. Behind that simplicity is a proper Carl Zeiss lens that opens nice and bright at the wide end, so it does better in dim light than you’d expect. With an older-style sensor, the photos have that warm, slightly filmic look people are chasing now. In silver it’s the clean, classic version.

THE LOOKS

In silver, the W50 is a small, brushed-metal slab — 89 × 57 × 23mm, 157g — with minimal buttons and a bright 2.5-inch screen on the back. There’s even a little optical window near the top you can peer through to frame shots the old-fashioned way. Nothing about it is complicated; it’s built to be picked up and used. The lens pokes out a touch when it’s on, then tucks back when you’re done. Also came in black.

THE SPECS

The lens is a proper Carl Zeiss that opens bright at the wide end, so indoor and dim-light shots come out better than most cheap cameras of its day. It zooms in 3× to bring things a bit closer. The older-style sensor gives that warm, slightly filmic look these are loved for. You can focus incredibly close, about 2cm, for detail shots of small things. There’s a little optical window to frame through, handy in bright sun. Two honest notes: no stabiliser, so keep still, and it likes good light. Stores on Sony’s Memory Stick. 89 × 57 × 23mm, 157g.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

  • A bright Carl Zeiss lens: opens wide to pull in light, so indoor and dim shots come out better than most cheap cameras of its era.
  • Focuses super close, about 2cm: get right up to a small thing — a flower, a ring — and fill the frame with detail, no extra kit.
  • An optical window to frame through: peer through it like an old film camera, handy in bright sun when the screen washes out.

THE VERDICT

The W50 is a lovely simple thing — no menus to get lost in, just a bright Carl Zeiss lens, a clear screen, and a shutter button. That bright lens means it copes indoors better than most cameras this cheap and old, the close-up focus is fun for detail shots, and the photos have that warm, filmic early-digital look people want now. No stabiliser and a modest zoom mean it’s happiest in good light, shooting nearby. In silver it’s the pure, classic pick.
