Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-FX35 arrived in early 2008 as a premium ultracompact that pushed the boundaries of wide-angle photography in a pocket-sized body. With its Leica-branded 25mm equivalent lens—one of the widest available on any compact camera at the time—the FX35 was designed for photographers who wanted to capture expansive scenes without lugging around larger gear. The all-metal body and sophisticated feature set positioned it as a serious tool for casual shooters who appreciated quality optics and build.

THE LOOKS

In silver, the FX35 has a refined, premium aesthetic with an anodized metal finish that feels substantial and well-crafted. The body is remarkably slim at just 22mm deep despite housing a 4× zoom lens, with clean lines and minimal decoration that give it a professional, understated look. The design emphasizes quality over flash, with the blue Leica badge on the lens barrel serving as the only real embellishment.

THE SPECS

The FX35 uses a 10.1-megapixel CCD sensor paired with Panasonic’s Venus Engine IV image processor. The Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 4× optical zoom lens covers an exceptional 25-100mm equivalent range with MEGA O.I.S. optical image stabilization. The 2.5-inch LCD with 230,000-dot resolution handles composition and review, while 720p HD video recording at 30fps captures motion with mono audio.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

• Exceptional 25mm wide-angle lens: One of the widest lenses available on any compact camera in 2008, capturing nearly double the viewing space of typical 35mm compacts.
• Leica optics and build quality: The Leica-branded lens and all-metal construction gave it a premium feel that elevated it above typical plastic compacts.
• Intelligent Auto mode: Advanced scene detection automatically recognized portrait, scenery, macro, night portrait, and night scenery modes for optimal results.

THE VERDICT

The FX35 is a sophisticated, well-built ultracompact from Panasonic’s premium lineup. Its genuinely wide-angle lens and solid metal construction made it a capable tool for photographers who wanted expansive perspectives without compromising portability.
