Nikon Coolpix S3100

Nikon’s Coolpix S3100 arrived in February 2011 as an entry-level ultracompact built around one straightforward idea — make it easy, make it slim, make it colorful. The Smart Portrait System handled portraits automatically: detecting up to twelve faces, firing the shutter when someone smiled, warning about blinks, and softening skin tones without touching a single setting. In citrus yellow, it became something deliberately cheerful — part of a seven-color lineup that treated cameras as personal accessories, in what turned out to be the final window before smartphones made that pitch irrelevant.

THE LOOKS

In citrus yellow, the S3100 is hard to miss — one of seven colors including purple, red, black, blue, pink, and silver, all wearing the same clean aluminum shell. The body measures 94 × 58 × 18.4mm and weighs 118g, slim enough that the lens retracts completely flush when powered off. There’s no grip to speak of, which is the honest trade-off for that 18.4mm profile — but it disappears into a pocket without argument, and in yellow it announces itself confidently when it comes back out.

• 18.4mm body with 5× zoom: Nikon fit a 26–130mm zoom range into a body thinner than many 3× competitors from the same year — the headline engineering achievement of the S3100.
• Seven colors including citrus yellow: Silver and black existed for people who wanted a camera. Purple, pink, red, yellow, and blue existed for people who wanted an accessory — and in 2011, that was a real distinction.

THE VERDICT

The S3100 is the entry-level compact done with genuine conviction. The 18.4mm body with a 5× zoom was a real achievement at the price, the EXPEED C2 processing kept image quality honest at base ISOs, and the seven color options made the whole package feel considered rather than generic. Electronic VR has its limits and noise climbs fast above ISO 400 — but for casual daylight shooting in any of those seven colors, it delivered exactly what it promised.
